Thank you so much, Ven. Hong Yang! Yes, I hope we can meet, and talk more of Daoist texts to translate, and compare with Tantric Buddhist mijue. The Daoist Beidou Fa 北斗法，and Qingwei Wuleifa 清微五雷法 have parallel texts, mudra, and mantra with Tendai and Shigon Buddhism, dating from the late tang dynasty (before 845, when Tang Wuzong outlawed Mikkyo practice).

Dear Dr. Saso,

It's been a long time since I contacted you. Just by chance I thought of you and googled you. I downloaded the text too and I will take a look at it this fall. I'm a translator of Buddhist sutras now of only 9 years. I have considered translating some Daoist texts to help out. But I'm not sure where to start and that would be along side my usual efforts at assisting in the translation of the Mahayana Chinese Triptitaka. I'm interested in the daily recitations in the Daoist community and I have some texts from another site that I have worked on.

Perhaps I need to travel to China to meet with the masters themselves...

I recently talked to Ven. Yifa who mentioned her interest in having all the sections of the Vinaya translated and may do that for fun. I've been asked to join the translation efforts of the Yogacara Bhumi Shastra, if I remember right it's massive. I did only the food offering service as it's most commonly offered in temples, it took me 3 months on that.

Hope your Labor Day was peaceful.

Keep in touch

John, great to get your e-mail. I am trying to set up something now, and am awaiting a response from Lhasa, it takes a certain number of people to go together, in order to get the Lhasa travel permit, while Kham and Amdo did not require this. There aren't enough of us at this moment (only 3) so I have asked Kunga-la in Lhasa if we might be appended to some other group. Gyantse is incredibly rich in imagery, neither Tucci or Lobue covered it in depth, the 3rd floor murals above the Pelkor Temple are equally stunning, seldom pictured, showing 3 entire walls covered with rarely seen or studied Mandala -- perhaps rivaling the (now destroyed) Ngor images. Let us communicate by e-mail, so much more to say: michael_saso@yahoo.com
